Member Spotlight: Christine
After International Women's Day on Saturday 8th March, we thought it was the perfect time to kick off our member interviews, and feature one of the most inspirational women in our organisation; Christine! Christine started in B Band but recently made the leap to A Band on 2nd horn, plus she also helps out with our beginners in C Band. She does so much for our organisation and we're so grateful for all her support.
Q. What position do you play and which band(s) do you play in?
A. I play 2nd horn in A band, solo horn in B Band and I help with the beginners in C band.
Q. How long have you played for?
A. I started playing when I was 8 years old.
Q. What made you start playing a brass instrument?
A. I was given the opportunity to learn to play whilst in the Salvation Army and I also played in the band at high school. Learning to play the Tenor Horn is one of the best things I have ever done and really missed it when I left school. It's a real joy and pleasure to be playing again after many many years of not doing so.
Q. What's your favourite thing about playing in the band?
A. One of my favourite things about being in the band is learning a new piece, practicing it, rehearsing with the band, and then performing it at a concert or a band contest. The audience's applause is almost euphoric giving me a real sense of achievement and satisfaction.
Q. What's your favourite piece (to play or listen to) and why?
A. Each band practice begins with the playing of a hymn. Hymns hold a special place in my heart, not just as a form of music, but as a vital part of my spiritual journey. They provide comfort in times of distress, joy in moments of celebration, and a profound connection to my faith.
Q. What advice would you give to someone who's thinking of joining one of the bands?
A. Plucking up the courage to take the first step to enquire about Bloom Music Community CIC, whether its the bands or the choirs can be quite daunting but it is worth it and you will be met with a warm welcome.
So, if you're standing at the crossroads, uncertain about stepping forward, let me offer you this piece of advice: do it, just do it! The joy, fulfilment, and camaraderie you will find at Bloom far outweigh any initial apprehension. Embrace the opportunity!
Q. What do you do outside of band?
A. After retiring from nursing, I became a priest in the Church of England and minister at two churches in Heywood.
Q. Any other hidden talents or hobbies?
A. Spending time with my family is very important. Our time together, whether it be through family dinners, outings, or simple moments at home, is cherished and invaluable.
I find also immense pleasure in strolling through the beautiful countryside that surrounds Rochdale and Littleborough. These leisurely walks are not only a source of physical exercise but also a time for reflection and mindfulness.
Stay tuned for more member interviews coming soon!
